Close Reading Lesson
Lesson Preparation
Once I attended the TC Professional Development workshop titled, "Falling in love with Close Reading," I was inspired and formed lessons that contained ways to invite students into the rigor of close reading and analyzing while examining parts of themselves and their own motivations. Here is an example of a "Close-Reading" lesson plan that I created for my students. As often acknowledged in the majority of lesson planning, the preparation and organization of the lesson behind the scenes is what led to the student-centered atmosphere of hard-work and engagement. Students were provided with multiple opportunities for success in this lesson plan as well, and this type of "close-reading" assignment sets high expectations for everyone in the classroom.
Evidence from an observation written by Valerie Vacchio:
Ms. Schwartz attended the Teachers College Calendar Day Workshop "Falling in Love with Close Reading of Literature and Reading Responses" on October 16,2013. The strategies and skills gained from her participation in this conference served as the foundation for this lesson. Ms. Schwartz is a member of the NCTE and LILAC. Ms. Schwartz frequently employs www.englishcompanionning.org as a platform for collaboration and to collect lesson ideas, resources, and inspiration for teaching and learning.
