Experience
"Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning." ~ Benjamin Franklin
As a result of my diverse teaching experiences, my instruction, classroom management, preparation, tools and forms for assessment, content knowledge, and my ability to reflect on a lesson have been better developed and improved upon, allowing students to have the best educational experience in English class!
I began my professional teaching career in 2008 at Three Village Central School District. From September 2008-2012 I had incredible teaching and collaborative experiences, earning Tenure in 2011. My first year, I taught at both Junior High Schools, presenting the opportunity to collaborate with a larger number of faculty in the district and meet a larger number of students. I was given the chance to teach 7th, 8th, and 9th grade, which has helped attribute to my knowledge in both the ELA examinations and the Regents examination. During this time, I drafted the 9th grade Honors/Pre-AP Vertical Alignment and updated the 9th grade curriculum in both Junior High Schools, as well as collaborated with the 7th grade Team in order to maintain records, communicate with parents, and create modifications. Furthermore, I taught 7th and 8th grade AIS classes for the A.M. School Program to help prepare students for the ELA examinations. Lastly, I was able to participate in many extracurricular events, such as being the soccer and track coach, an advisor to the school newspaper, and a coordinator for the school's Open-Mic Coffee House Poetry Jam. Additionally, serving as a cooperating teacher was an experience that I will never forget. Working together with another individual who shares my ardent passion for literature and appreciates the power that words possess was not only a joy for the students who noticed our enthusiasm, but it taught me a new method to give reflective and constructive feedback. Unfortunately, due to budgetary constraints, I was excessed, though the positive teaching and learning experiences I garnered there have helped guide all of my subsequent ideas and techniques towards instruction.
I continued my teaching career in Longwood School District where I taught 9th and 10th grade English. In this school I collaborated with the English department and we focused on using data to drive instruction, as well as differentiated techniques regarding the writing and reading processes especially. The students' academic prowess continued to thrive, along with my learning through this experience. I had the opportunity to collaborate mostly with the English department and History department, where we would focus on cross-curricular research papers. NYSED is very similar to Danielson's ideas and rubric, so I gained experience to further my instruction by giving the students more accountability and utilizing different ways to differentiate to meet everyone's needs. Through professional development opportunities, my knowledge and range of resources to better my teaching practices continued to grow. Working in both school districts has given me the experience and opportunities that have helped better prepare me for my future here at Oyster Bay High School.
