Socratic Seminars
Socratic Seminars keep students engaged in multiple ways. Socratic seminars have become an important part of my teaching methodology because it fosters student accountability for preparation, interpretation and understanding of the text, and creating and responding to higher-level questioning. In addition, students learn styles of inviting shy classmates into the discussion at hand and are more aware of their gestures and body movements. The discussions that take place are reflective and analysis-based. The expectations of Socratic seminars have been discussed and are posted on the book shelf for students to look back to if necessary. Students have shared feedback on this form of class discussion and the majority of the feedback is to continue Socratic seminars. They agree that it is nice to hear everyone's voice regarding specific matters we are studying. Through Socratic seminar practice, students have gained more confidence in themselves and enjoy sharing their opinions and asking questions.
