Open House Night: Parent Sheet and Power Point Presentation
In the beginning of the year, it is essential to build a relationship not only with the students, but with parents as well. I believe that the only way for students to succeed is to create a team consisting of teachers, parents, and students aiming for the same, clearly defined goals. To meet these goals, communication between all three groups is key! Initially, students are given their course policy sheets that parents must sign. On that course policy sheet my email address is accessible for students and parents. During Open House Night, I share a PowerPoint presentation with the parents to cover what will be accomplished throughout the year - as well as grading policies, classroom policies, and expectations for myself, the students and the parents/guardians. In the beginning of Open House Night, I ask parents to complete a quick worksheet in which they share their email address, phone numbers, and the times and means that they are most easily reached. In addition, I ask them to jot down any notes they would like me to know specifically about their child so I can best meet their needs throughout the year.
