Preparation
"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." ~ Benjamin Franklin
10th and 11th Grade Units of Study
As part of the curriculum planning team, I have configured 10th and 11th grade Units of Study. Each unit consists of the aligned Common Core State Standards, Essential Questions (thematic questions and skill-based questions), Thematic Understandings (Big Ideas/Enduring Understandings), Core and Supplementary texts, Concepts and skills students will be able to do (academic vocabulary, terms), and Means of Formative, Informative and Summative assessment. By creating these unit plans, it has helped the reflection process as well as my focus when teaching. I continue to add to the units of study as I work through them to further align lessons to the new Common Core Regents exam.
Regarding planning and preparation of lesson plans, Dr. Valerie Vacchio commented on a write-up that "The planning, organization, and differentiation incorporated into this lesson were exemplary! Ms. Schwartz's knowledge-base of instructional planning was clearly evident throughout the observation protocol: pre-observation conference, observation, and post-observation conference. At the post-observation conference, Ms. Schwartz provided Dr. Vacchio with a detailed, insightful, written lesson reflection, which demonstrated Ms. Schwartz's enhancement of pedagogical skill and content knowledge. Ms. Schwartz conveyed her passion for teaching English and her deep respect for her students during this 40 minute lesson. Among Ms. Schwartz's strengths are her ability to communicate with students, establish a culture for learning, and establish high academic expectations for ALL students.
