The "Soundtrack of My Life" project is always the first project that my tenth grade classes complete. Written skills, oral presentations skills, interpretive and analysis skills, as well as technological skills are all assessed in this assignment. In addition, this is one way that my students and I get to know and share personal stories with one another. In this project, students must choose three specific events that have shaped them into the person they are today. Once they choose three events, the students are then asked to find song lyrics that could go along with their experiences. I then proceed to teach the writing process (how to intertwine lyrics/poetry into their own writing; in-line citation rules; expected details in paragraphs). Along with instructing them, I share my own model essay and Power Point presentation. Students are then given time to write, create a presentation, and share their presentation with the class. Below is the rubric that we go over before they write the essay. This assignment always proves to be a success. Although the majority of these students have been going to school together since kindergarten, they are always surprised by events shared classmates, or they realize that they never knew that their classmates had such incredible or detrimental experiences in their lives. It opens up the students' eyes and minds, and together we share both positive and negative events and reflect upon our individual growth as a result of them.
